London city council has greenlit an extension of the e-scooter pilot program, introducing fines for parents of underage riders and calling on the provincial government to establish province-wide regulations for the devices.
Council Decision
During a meeting on May 12, 2026, council voted in favor of continuing the e-scooter pilot, which allows the use of electric kick scooters on city streets and bike lanes. The extension includes new measures to address safety concerns, particularly regarding underage riders. Parents or guardians of children caught operating e-scooters illegally could face fines.
Provincial Regulations Requested
Council also passed a motion urging the Ontario government to create a consistent regulatory framework for e-scooters across the province. Currently, rules vary by municipality, leading to confusion and enforcement challenges. London officials hope that province-wide regulations will improve safety and clarity for riders and law enforcement alike.
The decision comes amid growing popularity of e-scooters as a convenient and eco-friendly transportation option. However, concerns about accidents, sidewalk riding, and underage use have prompted calls for stricter oversight.
City staff will now work on implementing the extended pilot, including public education campaigns about the new fines and safety rules. The province has not yet responded to London's request for regulations.
