Ontario Provincial Police have shut down all eastbound lanes of Highway 401 after a multi-vehicle collision on Saturday afternoon. The crash occurred near Kitchener, prompting a large emergency response.
OPP spokesperson Sergeant Mark Baxter confirmed that multiple vehicles were involved and that several people have been transported to hospital with injuries of varying severity. The exact number of vehicles and casualties has not yet been released.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Emergency crews, including fire services and paramedics, remain on scene. The OPP's Traffic Collision Investigation unit has been deployed to determine the cause of the crash.
“We are asking motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes such as Highway 7 or regional roads,” said Sergeant Baxter. “The investigation is in its early stages, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
Traffic Disruptions and Delays
The closure has caused significant traffic backups stretching for several kilometres. The OPP expects the highway to remain closed for several hours as cleanup and investigation continue.
According to the OPP, the crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Drivers are advised to check real-time traffic updates and plan for delays.
“We urge patience as our officers work diligently to clear the scene and ensure safety,” added Sergeant Baxter.
