A serious multi-vehicle collision has forced the complete closure of Highway 1 westbound in Surrey on Monday morning, December 22, 2025, creating significant traffic disruptions for Metro Vancouver commuters.
Details of the Collision and Emergency Response
According to the B.C. Highway Patrol, police were called to the scene of a three-vehicle accident on Highway 1 westbound at 176th Street just after 7:15 a.m. The severity of the crash prompted a full shutdown of the westbound lanes between 176th Street and 200th Street.
B.C. Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Michael McLaughlin stated that the collision resulted in life-threatening injuries. "This collision caused life-threatening injuries, so motorists are facing full and partial highway shutdowns as emergency crews help the injured and investigate the cause of the crash," McLaughlin said.
Major Traffic Impacts and Alternate Routes
The closure includes all westbound lanes and the associated on and off ramps between the two interchanges. Drive B.C. has warned drivers to expect significant congestion east of 200th Street and is strongly advising commuters to seek an alternative route for the duration of the closure.
In a social media update, Drive BC posted: "⛔️UPDATE #BCHwy1 - The highway is closed westbound at 176th St, as well as the westbound on/off ramps. No access from 200 St to 176th. Expect delays due to congestion in the surrounding area. Assessment in progress. Consider an alternate route. #SurreyBC #LangleyBC…"
Police Investigation and Call for Witnesses
As emergency personnel tend to the injured and clear the scene, police have launched an investigation into the cause of the early morning crash. Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance.
"Anyone who saw what happened, or has dash-camera video of the driving behaviour leading up to the crash, is asked to call police," urged Cpl. McLaughlin. The investigation is ongoing, and the highway is expected to remain closed for an extended period.
