Ontario Provincial Police have laid a stunt driving charge against a motorist from the Greater Toronto Area following a high-speed incident on a northern highway.
High-Speed Stop on Highway 11
The charge stems from an event that occurred on Thursday, December 12, 2025. According to the OPP, an officer recorded a vehicle travelling at 158 kilometres per hour on Highway 11 in the vicinity of Trout Lake, which is located in Northern Ontario.
Details of the Charge and Potential Consequences
The driver, whose specific municipality within the GTA was not released, was immediately charged with stunt driving under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act. This offence is triggered when a driver is caught exceeding the speed limit by 40 km/h or more on roads with a posted limit of 80 km/h or below, or at speeds of 150 km/h or greater on any roadway.
The penalties for a stunt driving conviction are severe and can include:
- A mandatory 30-day licence suspension at the roadside.
- A 14-day vehicle impoundment.
- Substantial fines upon conviction.
- Potential for further licence suspension by the courts.
- Significantly increased insurance premiums.
OPP's Ongoing Enforcement Focus
This incident highlights the provincial police's continued focus on aggressive and dangerous driving behaviours on Ontario's highways, including those in northern regions. The OPP routinely conducts enforcement campaigns targeting speeding, stunt driving, and impaired operation to improve road safety for all travellers.
Police are reminding motorists that speed limits are set for safety and that exceeding them, especially by such a large margin, drastically increases the risk of a catastrophic collision. They urge drivers to plan their trips with ample time, obey all traffic laws, and adjust their speed for winter road conditions which can be unpredictable in December.
