Gordie Howe Bridge Unveils Discount Toll Program for Windsor-Essex Travelers
Windsor-Essex travelers can now secure significant savings on tolls in anticipation of the Gordie Howe International Bridge's opening this spring. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) and Bridging North America (BNA) have launched Breakaway personal accounts, expanding a previously business-only discount program to individuals and families.
Breakaway Program Details and Benefits
On Tuesday, officials announced the rollout of Breakaway, a program designed to offer automatic payments and exclusive savings for all types of travelers. Chuck Andary, interim CEO and chief legal officer of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, emphasized the program's versatility.
"Whether you will be a daily commuter, a frequent visitor of local amenities or occasionally crossing for vacation, passenger vehicle travellers can save time and money on each trip across the Gordie Howe International Bridge by registering for a Breakaway personal account," Andary stated.
Toll Rates and Discount Structure
The standard toll for passenger vehicles will be C$8 or US$5.75 each way. However, Breakaway members will enjoy a substantial 25 per cent discount, reducing rates to C$6 or US$4.35 per crossing.
For commercial vehicles, the savings are equally impressive:
- Commercial trucks, oversized vehicles, and larger passenger vehicles will pay a standard toll of C$12 or US$8.75 per axle.
- The Breakaway discounted rate will be C$9.60 or US$6.90 per axle.
Convenient Technology and Registration Process
Motorists equipped with Breakaway tags will experience seamless crossings. They can pull up to any open toll lane, have charges automatically applied to their accounts, and drive away within seconds.
Registration for Breakaway accounts is currently available at GordieHoweInternationalBridge.com. Tags will be mailed to registrants and activated online before installation on vehicles.
Bridge Opening Timeline and Infrastructure Details
David Henderson, CEO of Bridging North America, highlighted the importance of the program launch in the broader context of bridge preparation. "With testing and commissioning progressing across the Gordie Howe International Bridge, we are validating the systems and operations that will support opening day," Henderson explained. "Launching Breakaway personal accounts is part of that preparation, helping ensure both the infrastructure and its users are ready for a successful first crossing."
After initially targeting early 2026, officials now anticipate a Spring opening, though a specific date remains unannounced. The Gordie Howe Bridge will feature:
- Six traffic lanes for vehicular transport
- Sixteen dedicated toll lanes
- Sixty combined Canada and U.S. inspection lanes
- Separate walking and cycling lanes that will be free of charge
The bridge will provide a direct connection between Ontario's Highway 401 and Michigan's Interstate 75, significantly improving cross-border transportation efficiency.
Community Engagement and Additional Information
More details about the Breakaway program will be available at the WDBA's upcoming public information meetings scheduled for April. These sessions will provide residents with opportunities to learn more about the discount program and bridge operations ahead of the anticipated spring opening.
The night-illuminated Gordie Howe International Bridge, visible from the Windsor side since December 2025, represents a major infrastructure project that will transform cross-border travel between Canada and the United States.
