GO Transit Boosts Service for World Cup Surge

Metrolinx has announced plans to significantly increase GO Transit train service on the Lakeshore West line during FIFA World Cup matches, anticipating a surge of riders attending the soccer tournament at BMO Field, renamed Toronto Stadium for the event.

Enhanced Service Details

Before and after matches at the stadium, Metrolinx will operate up to six trains per hour between Exhibition GO station, the closest stop to the venue, and Union Station. This boost is part of a broader effort to accommodate the expected influx of fans.

Previously, Metrolinx announced frequent 15-minute service throughout most of the day on both the Lakeshore East and West lines starting June 10. The increased frequency will ensure smoother travel for spectators.

TTC Also Preparing

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has also ramped up its preparations. The TTC's planned World Cup service increases were recently tested when Toronto FC and the Blue Jays hosted events simultaneously, drawing 45,000 to TFC's match against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and 41,000 to the Blue Jays game against the Angels at Rogers Centre.

During that test, the TTC added service on critical routes, including Lines 1 and 2, the 509 Harbourfront streetcar, and the 511 Bathurst streetcar. A total of 19 subway trains were added and strategically staged for match end, along with 13 streetcars on the 509 and 511 routes, which served Exhibition Loop every five minutes. The 504 King corridor will now have frequent five-minute service through the tournament.

City Gears Up for Tournament

Toronto is preparing for the biggest soccer event, with a mini pitch built at Nathan Phillips Square featuring a countdown clock to the first match on June 12. The city will host six matches: June 12, June 17, June 20, June 23, June 26, and July 2.

For fans without tickets, the FIFA Fan Festival at The Bentway near Fort York offers an alternative. Free tickets were quickly claimed earlier this month, but the city has indicated that more will become available.
