Approximately 81,000 addresses in British Columbia will lose door-to-door mail delivery next year as Canada Post continues its transition to community mailboxes.
Canada Post's Community Mailbox Expansion
On Thursday, Canada Post announced a second round of communities scheduled for conversion from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in 2027. This includes 37 communities across B.C., Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and Alberta, affecting about 485,000 addresses in total.
Earlier this year, Canada Post had already identified 136,000 addresses in 13 communities slated for community mailbox installation toward the end of this year or early next year.
Across Canada, approximately three-quarters of addresses already use community mailboxes or centralized mailboxes, such as those in apartment lobbies. As of mid-2026, about four million Canadian addresses still receive door-to-door mail delivery.
Why the Shift to Community Mailboxes?
The conversion to centralized, secure community mailboxes is part of Canada Post's efforts to stabilize its finances after years of decline, including a record loss last year and another significant loss in the first quarter of 2026.
"Community mailbox conversions are a key element of Canada Post's plan to transform the postal service to meet the evolving needs of Canadians without becoming a recurring burden on taxpayers," read a news release announcing the latest group of communities. Door-to-door delivery costs significantly more than community mailboxes.
Canada Post's Financial Struggles
In the first quarter of 2026, Canada Post recorded a $205 million before-tax loss due to declining revenues across all business segments. This overshadows the $41 million loss recorded in the same quarter the previous year. Revenue also fell by $181 million, or 14 percent, in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year.
B.C. Communities Affected in 2027
The latest round of communities announced for conversion includes:
- Burnaby
- Colwood
- Coquitlam
- Esquimalt
- Kelowna
- Langford
- New Westminster
- Port Coquitlam
- Port Moody
- Saanich
- Songhees Nation (New Songhees 1A)
- Victoria
- View Royal
- Westbank First Nation (Tsinstikeptum 10 and Tsinstikeptum 9)
- West Kelowna
Specific postal codes have not yet been shared, but residents will be notified before installation of the community mailboxes. Canada Post will now reach out to local municipalities to begin discussions for installation, a process that will take several months.
