A Vancouver couple is speaking out after discovering that a tenant who illegally listed their condo on Airbnb was a licensed real estate agent. Janko and Bojana Jerinic shared a screenshot of the listing with CTV News, expressing their frustration over the situation.
Illegal Airbnb Listing
The Jerinics found their condo listed on Airbnb without their permission. The tenant, who is a licensed real estate agent, had sublet the unit on the short-term rental platform. The couple said they were shocked to learn that a professional in the real estate industry would engage in such activity.
‘Insult to Injury’
“It’s an insult to injury,” said Bojana Jerinic. “We trusted this person as a tenant, and they violated that trust. The fact that they are a licensed real estate agent makes it even worse.” The couple is now dealing with the aftermath, including potential fines and legal issues.
Regulatory Concerns
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about short-term rental regulations in Vancouver. The city has strict rules requiring hosts to be licensed and to only rent out their primary residence. Illegal listings can result in hefty fines. The couple hopes their story will serve as a warning to other property owners.
Tenant’s License Questioned
The Jerinics have reported the tenant to the Real Estate Council of British Columbia, questioning whether the agent’s license should be reviewed. The couple said they want accountability and hope that this case will lead to stricter enforcement of rental laws.
“We want to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” said Janko Jerinic. “It’s a violation of our rights as homeowners.”
