Carlingwood Shopping Centre, once Ottawa's largest mall, is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The milestone was marked on June 26, 2026, as the shopping centre reflects on its history and evolution over the decades.
A Landmark in Ottawa Retail
Opened in 1956, Carlingwood was the first enclosed shopping centre in Ottawa and quickly became a retail hub. At its peak, it housed over 100 stores and attracted shoppers from across the region. According to CTV News Ottawa's Peter Szperling, the centre has undergone multiple renovations to adapt to changing consumer habits.
Evolution Through the Decades
Over the years, Carlingwood has faced competition from newer malls like Rideau Centre and Bayshore Shopping Centre. Despite this, it has maintained a loyal customer base. The mall's management has focused on community events and local tenants to stay relevant. “We’re proud to be part of Ottawa’s history,” said a spokesperson for the centre.
Community Impact
The anniversary celebration included special promotions and a display of historical photos. Local residents shared memories of shopping at Carlingwood in its early days. The mall remains a key commercial anchor for the neighbourhood, providing jobs and services to the community.
