Shake Shack Expands to Western Canada with First Calgary Location
Shake Shack Opens First Western Canada Restaurant in Calgary

Shake Shack Makes Western Canadian Debut in Calgary

Shake Shack, the globally recognized fast-casual dining brand, is officially expanding into Western Canada with its first location set to open in Calgary this spring. This marks a significant milestone as the company's first Canadian restaurant outside Ontario, answering what company officials describe as "the call of the West" for their premium burger offerings.

Strategic Location at CF Chinook Centre

The inaugural Western Canadian Shake Shack will occupy space on the Upper Level of CF Chinook Centre, strategically positioned across from the dining hall. According to company representatives, the design emphasizes enlightened hospitality principles with intentional architecture meant to foster community gathering. Billy Richmond, Business Director at Shake Shack Canada, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating that Alberta has been on their radar since the brand first launched in Canada in 2024.

"Shake Shack represents more than just a burger destination—it serves as a neighborhood hub where people can celebrate delicious food within a community atmosphere," Richmond explained. "We're excited to introduce our signature menu items alongside some exclusive offerings created specifically for Calgary."

Premium Menu Featuring Alberta Ingredients

The Calgary location will showcase Shake Shack's commitment to premium, thoughtfully sourced ingredients with a distinct Alberta focus. The centerpiece remains the iconic ShackBurger®, now prepared with 100 percent Alberta Angus beef raised without antibiotics and served fresh rather than frozen. This maintains the same quality standards Shake Shack upholds across its Canadian operations while incorporating proudly local beef.

Additional menu highlights include:

  • The Chicken Shack™ featuring whole white-meat Canadian chicken raised cage-free without antibiotics
  • Classic crinkle-cut fries prepared to traditional specifications
  • Hand-spun shakes made exclusively with Canadian dairy products
  • Applewood smoked bacon sourced directly from local Alberta farms

Local Artistic Collaboration with Irene Neyman

In a move to establish authentic local connections, Shake Shack has partnered with Calgary-based artist Irene Neyman for its first creative collaboration in Alberta. Neyman has created original artwork specifically for the Chinook Centre location, featuring her signature style of bright colors balanced with simple shapes, textures, and thoughtful details.

The mural celebrates Calgary's most recognizable landmarks while maintaining Shake Shack's distinctive personality. "The artwork is designed to feel playful, welcoming, and deeply connected to Calgary—creating a space where people genuinely want to spend time," Neyman commented regarding her creative approach.

Community-Focused Business Philosophy

Shake Shack's expansion aligns with its longstanding mission to "Stand For Something Good®," a philosophy developed since the company's origins as a hot dog cart in New York City's Madison Square Park in 2001. This mission encompasses premium ethically sourced ingredients, a people-first corporate culture, and meaningful community investment.

Richmond emphasized that the Calgary opening represents more than just geographical expansion: "As we establish ourselves in Calgary, we're committed to building meaningful, long-term relationships with local partners who share our dedication to quality and community." This commitment extends to employment practices, with the company focusing on creating meaningful jobs that include comprehensive training, development opportunities, and clear pathways for team members to advance into leadership positions.

The Western Canadian expansion represents a strategic growth initiative for Shake Shack as it continues to establish its presence across Canada, bringing its distinctive blend of premium fast-casual dining and community engagement to new markets while adapting to local characteristics and partnerships.
