Antimony, a metal crucial for ammunition, flame retardants, and next-generation batteries, has become a national security priority. Yet the United States produces almost none of it, relying heavily on imports from countries that could use this dependence as leverage. A wave of capital is now flowing to the few companies that could change that.
Why Antimony Matters
For decades, antimony was an industrial afterthought, used to harden lead, retard flames, and clarify glass. But when China tightened export controls on this critical mineral, Western governments realized a material essential for defense and energy was controlled by a strategic rival. Antimony is used in ammunition, military hardware, night-vision devices, flame retardants, and emerging long-duration energy storage. The United States formally classifies it as a critical mineral.
The Supply Gap
The U.S. mines effectively no antimony domestically. In May 2026, Perpetua Resources secured a US$2.9 billion loan from the Export-Import Bank to advance its Stibnite gold-antimony project in Idaho, the only large-scale domestic antimony resource. This billion-dollar commitment signals how seriously the government treats the supply gap and highlights the need for more projects.
NevGold's Opportunity
Vancouver-based NevGold Corp. (TSXV: NAU) (OTCQX: NAUFF) (Frankfurt: 5E50) is stepping into this gap. Its flagship Limousine Butte project in eastern Nevada, once a gold-only story, now includes antimony. The brownfield site hosted a gold operation in the 1980s, leaving behind historical leach pads with antimony that was never processed. NevGold believes this at-surface material could enable near-term antimony production within 12 to 18 months, much faster than typical new mines.
Strategic Implications
The U.S. government's commitment to Perpetua Resources underscores the urgency of rebuilding domestic antimony supply. NevGold's Limousine Butte could become a key part of that effort, offering a faster path to production. As the critical-minerals boom accelerates, companies with credible domestic antimony stories are attracting increasing attention from investors and policymakers alike.
