Ontario Government Backs Reshoring Initiative with $1.5 Million Grant
In a strategic move amid ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States, the Ontario government has awarded a significant $1.5 million grant to support the expansion of a Harrow-based manufacturing company. This funding is specifically designed to incentivize the repatriation of jobs and production capabilities that had previously been moved south of the border.
EnerQuest Technologies Solutions Leads Manufacturing Resurgence
Harrow's EnerQuest Technologies Solutions Inc., a member of the Integra Group of Companies, is spearheading this reshoring effort. The company has announced a comprehensive $15.8 million investment to expand its manufacturing facility. The core objective is to bring the production of switchgears—critical components for power distribution and protection systems—back to Ontario from the United States.
"The key component of the EnerQuest application for the grant is that they are reshoring the fabrication of switch gear panels," emphasized MPP Anthony Leardi (PC — Essex). "Not only are we happy that we're expanding manufacturing in Harrow, but on top of that, we have brought home some work that we used to do here in Ontario that was then moved to the United States, and now it's coming back to Ontario."
Substantial Job Creation and Economic Impact
This substantial investment, bolstered by the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund grant, is projected to safeguard the existing 154 positions at the Harrow plant while simultaneously creating 125 new jobs. The initiative represents a dual victory for the local economy, preserving current employment while generating significant new opportunities.
Company officials highlighted the indispensable role of the local community in making this expansion feasible. "While the technology is important, what truly makes this expansion possible is the community around us," stated Malena Marshall, Director at EnerQuest Technologies Solutions. "Harrow has been more than just a location for our operations—it has been a partner in our growth. The support from local leaders, educators, and residents has helped create an environment where companies like EnerQuest can invest with confidence and build long-term careers for the people who live here."
Strategic Advantages and Future Applications
The provincial grant is intended to empower companies to invest in advanced manufacturing technologies, reinforce regional supply chains, and cultivate high-quality employment within Southwestern Ontario. EnerQuest, which specializes in custom prefabricated electrical equipment, will use the expansion to relocate its switchgear sub-assembly manufacturing to the Harrow facility. This shift will diminish the company's dependence on a sister facility located in the United States.
Beyond mitigating tariff risks and enhancing production capacity, this strategic investment positions EnerQuest to fulfill confirmed contract demands across several high-growth sectors. The company is poised to supply critical infrastructure for data centers, modular housing units, and medical facilities, showcasing the diverse applications of its manufacturing capabilities.
The reshoring initiative underscores a broader provincial strategy to strengthen Ontario's industrial base, reduce external dependencies, and foster sustainable economic growth through targeted government support and corporate investment in local communities.
