Edmonton native Michael Monaghan won $1 million from a LOTTO MAX draw on May 8, 2026. The winning ticket was purchased at a Shell gas station near 127 Street and 132 Avenue.
Discovering the Win
Monaghan was watching the news with a warm coffee on May 8 when he decided to check some LOTTO MAX tickets he had bought. He scanned the first ticket and was greeted with a pleasant surprise.
"I scanned the very first ticket, and it said $1 million," Monaghan said in a Thursday news release. "I was honestly breathless."
His first thought was to call his partner and share the news. "I took a screenshot of the ticket to show her and to show my son… who promptly asked for a dirt bike," he added.
Plans for the Winnings
Monaghan plans to use some of his winnings to pay off his late mother's condo. "I also see a new truck on the horizon," he said. He intends to use the rest of the money on trips to destinations like the Dominican Republic, Ireland, and Hawaii.
