Suspect Arrested After String of Retail Thefts
Durham Regional Police have charged a 30-year-old man in connection with a series of armed robberies at Home Depot stores across the region. The suspect allegedly targeted multiple locations over several weeks, making off with over $20,000 in merchandise including power tools and building materials.
Police say the robberies occurred between May and June 2026 at Home Depot stores in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, and Pickering. In each incident, the suspect would enter the store, load a cart with high-value items, and then threaten employees with a weapon before fleeing. No injuries were reported.
Investigation and Charges
Detectives from the Durham Regional Police Service's Central East Division launched an investigation after the first robbery was reported in mid-May. Through surveillance footage and witness statements, they identified the suspect as a 30-year-old man from Oshawa.
On July 2, 2026, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in Oshawa, where they recovered stolen merchandise and evidence linking the suspect to the crimes. The man was arrested without incident. He faces 18 charges, including six counts of robbery with a weapon, six counts of disguise with intent, and six counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000.
"This individual posed a significant threat to public safety," said Detective Sergeant Mike Smith of the Durham Regional Police. "We are relieved to have him in custody and thank the public for their tips."
Impact on Retail and Community
The string of robberies had alarmed employees and customers in the affected communities. Home Depot released a statement saying they are cooperating with police and have implemented additional security measures at their stores.
"The safety of our associates and customers is our top priority," a Home Depot spokesperson said. "We are grateful to the Durham Regional Police for their swift action."
The accused was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court in Oshawa on July 10, 2026. Police are continuing to investigate whether the suspect is linked to other similar incidents in the region.
