Calgary Businesses Navigate Boil-Water Advisory Challenges with Creative Solutions

Businesses in southwest Calgary's Spruce Cliff, Wildwood, and Rosscarrock neighborhoods encountered significant operational hurdles this weekend due to an unexpected boil-water advisory. The advisory, which began on Friday, March 14, 2024, threatened to disrupt services for establishments relying on clean water, including those in and around Westbrook Mall.

Emergency Response Saves Sold-Out Weekend Shows

For Jubilations Dinner Theatre and Aussie Rules Piano Bar, the situation nearly resulted in the cancellation of a fully booked weekend of performances. Syreeta Bennie, the company's vice-president, described the moment staff discovered the water issue around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. "We called 311 to determine what was going on, and were told that they had found an issue in the water main along this block, and to just hold tight," she explained.

With food preparation for Friday night's show looming, the team faced a critical deadline. After multiple follow-up calls and website checks yielded no resolution timeline, the company's president took decisive action. "Our president was like, 'What do we do? We've got to find a solution.' So he called around, and we got to connect with Big Rock Water Hauling," Bennie recounted.

Third-Party Water Services to the Rescue

Big Rock Water Hauling responded swiftly, arriving within an hour and coordinating with a plumber to assess the building's needs. Their quick intervention allowed the theatre to proceed with Friday's shows uninterrupted. Shortly after the connection was established, the city notified the business that water service had been restored but with a boil-water advisory in effect.

Bennie emphasized the impracticality of boiling water for large crowds: "That made us go, 'Thank goodness we had this.' There's no way we could boil water for 2,000 people." The external water supply ensured business continuity for the weekend, accommodating patrons with birthdays, anniversaries, and long-planned visits.

Financial and Operational Considerations

While the solution came at a substantial cost, Bennie highlighted the priority of customer experience. "It was so important to us that we were able to maintain everybody's plans to the best of our ability. It's gonna be a really expensive undertaking as a business, but we felt that the loss of our guests not having the experience we promised is greater than the cost of doing that," she stated.

The city indicated that the advisory, unrelated to ongoing Bearspaw South feeder main updates, would likely remain in place for at least three days. Bennie noted that without further updates, sustaining third-party water services into the coming week might not be financially viable for the business.

Broader Impact on Local Commerce

This incident underscores the vulnerabilities businesses face during infrastructure disruptions. The proactive approach by Jubilations and Aussie Rules demonstrates how emergency planning and rapid response can mitigate potential losses. Other area establishments may face similar challenges as the advisory persists, highlighting the need for contingency strategies in water-dependent industries.

The collaboration with Big Rock Water Hauling not only saved the weekend's events but also set a precedent for community resilience in Calgary's southwest sector.
