Owen Sound Fire Department Launches Door-to-Door Safety Initiative
The Owen Sound Fire Department is taking a proactive approach to fire safety by visiting homes across the city. Firefighters will be knocking on doors to conduct safety checks and provide residents with important information about fire prevention.
What to Expect During the Visit
When firefighters come to your door, they will ask to check your smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly. They will also offer tips on creating a home escape plan and discuss common fire hazards. The visits are part of a broader effort to reduce fire-related injuries and deaths in the community.
Fire Chief Greg Nicol said, "Our goal is to make sure every home in Owen Sound has working smoke alarms and that families know what to do in case of a fire. This initiative is about preventing tragedies before they happen."
Community Response
Residents have generally welcomed the initiative. Many appreciate the personal touch and the opportunity to ask questions about fire safety. The department plans to visit all residential areas over the coming weeks, with a focus on neighborhoods with older homes or higher fire risk.
If you are not home when firefighters visit, they will leave a door hanger with information on how to schedule a follow-up appointment. The service is free and voluntary.
