A group of dedicated volunteers in Halifax has successfully filled a 40-foot shipping container with essential medical supplies for Cuba. The initiative, led by local community organizations, aims to address critical healthcare shortages in the Caribbean nation.
Community effort
The project mobilized dozens of volunteers who spent weeks collecting, sorting, and packing items including bandages, surgical gloves, antibiotics, and other medical necessities. The container is scheduled to depart from the Port of Halifax within the next week.
Supporting Cuban healthcare
Cuba has faced persistent shortages of medical supplies due to economic challenges and trade restrictions. The Halifax effort is part of a broader Canadian humanitarian response to support the island's healthcare system.
Organizers expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support, noting that donations came from individuals, local pharmacies, and hospitals across Nova Scotia. The container is expected to arrive in Cuba within three to four weeks.
