The first quarterly payments of Canada's enhanced Grocery Rebate begin today, July 3, 2026, delivering up to $234 per eligible adult. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the boost during a visit to a FreshCo grocery store in Brampton, Ont., on June 5, 2026.
Payment Details and Eligibility
The benefit, officially called the Grocery and Essentials Benefit, is now paid quarterly instead of a one-time lump sum. Eligible low-income Canadians will receive up to $234 per adult and $150 per child, with payments deposited automatically for those who filed 2025 taxes. The Canada Revenue Agency estimates 11 million households will benefit.
“This is about putting money back in the pockets of Canadians who need it most,” Carney said at the Brampton event. “We’re making sure the support is there every quarter, not just once.”
Impact on Households
The enhanced benefit is part of the federal government’s broader affordability package, which also includes increased GST credits and a temporary boost to the Canada Child Benefit. Food bank usage has risen 35% since 2022, according to Food Banks Canada, making the quarterly payments a critical lifeline.
“For families struggling with high grocery prices, this quarterly payment can make a real difference,” said Rachel Kiddell-Monroe, a policy analyst at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
How to Access the Benefit
No separate application is needed. Eligible individuals who filed their 2025 income tax return will receive the payment via direct deposit or cheque. Those who have not filed are encouraged to do so to ensure they receive the benefit. The next payment is scheduled for October 1, 2026.
