Canadian Online Donations: A Mixed Picture
A new report from CanadaHelps, The Giving Report 2026, reveals both promising and troubling trends in Canadian online giving. Julie Fiorini, general manager of charity and donor services at CanadaHelps, highlighted a concerning shift in donor behavior.
The Good: Increased Digital Giving
Online donations continue to grow, with more Canadians using digital platforms to support causes they care about. The convenience of online giving has expanded the donor base, particularly among younger generations.
The Bad: Economic Concerns Take Priority
However, the report shows that economic worries are now surpassing environmental protection as a top concern for Canadians. This shift may impact charitable giving, as donors prioritize personal financial stability.
Fiorini noted that this trend is concerning because it could lead to decreased donations for environmental and other causes. She urged charities to adapt their messaging to address donors' economic anxieties while still highlighting the importance of their missions.
The report also found that while overall donation amounts have increased, the number of donors has slightly declined. This suggests that existing donors are giving more, but fewer new donors are entering the fold.
