Prince Edward Island has announced a $5 million investment to support Netflix's adaptation of the novel This Summer Will Be Different. The announcement was made by Premier Rob Lantz, alongside Minister of Economic Development, Trade and AI Jenn Redmond, and Minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning Zack Bell, with Robin Neinstein from Netflix Canada present.
Economic Boost and Job Creation
The funding is expected to create jobs and stimulate the local economy, positioning P.E.I. as a competitive destination for film and television production. Premier Lantz emphasized the project's potential to showcase the province's landscapes and talent to a global audience, while also providing training opportunities for Islanders in the film industry.
Support for Local Industry
Minister Redmond highlighted that the investment aligns with the province's strategy to diversify its economy and attract creative industries. The adaptation is anticipated to bring significant spending on local goods and services, accommodation, and transportation, benefiting small businesses across the island.
Netflix's Robin Neinstein expressed gratitude for the partnership, noting that P.E.I.'s unique settings will bring the story to life authentically. The production is expected to hire local crew and extras, and will work with provincial film offices to ensure smooth operations.
This move follows other recent film incentives in Canada, as provinces compete to attract major productions. The novel This Summer Will Be Different is a contemporary romance, and its adaptation is slated for release on Netflix in 2027.
