Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur and former majority owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, has expanded his basketball portfolio by joining the ownership group of the Canadian Elite Basketball League's (CEBL) Brampton Honey Badgers. Cuban, widely known as a co-host of the television show Shark Tank, made the announcement on Thursday.
Canadian Basketball Potential
In a press release on the CEBL's website, Cuban expressed his enthusiasm for the new venture. He stated that Canadian basketball is one of the most underappreciated basketball markets globally. According to Cuban, the talent level in Canada is exceptionally high and continues to improve daily. The CEBL, he noted, provides a platform for Canadians to witness this talent in exciting and affordable games suitable for families. Cuban emphasized his eagerness to contribute to building the Brampton fanbase and to replicate some of the success and fun experienced in Dallas within the Toronto area.
How Cuban Got Involved
Cuban, who still holds approximately a 27% stake in the Dallas Mavericks, has longstanding relationships with Honey Badgers owner Leonard Asper and CEO Al Whitley. Asper remarked that the team is thrilled to add Cuban's basketball expertise to the organization. He noted that Cuban had already been assisting informally, including introducing him to Whitley. Asper stated that Cuban brings unparalleled basketball knowledge and a winning culture, and the entire Honey Badgers organization is honored to have him on board. The specific details of Cuban's investment and his official role within the corporate structure have not been disclosed.
