OTTAWA — Raising capital to support Canadian tech startups is rarely a smooth journey, but a new high-seas, million-dollar pitch competition on Lake Ontario is aiming to keep Canada’s sinking venture capital market afloat. The event, known as Founder Ball, promises to combine a live competition for $1 million in capital investment with an elegant gala set against the Toronto skyline.
Event Details and Participants
On June 11, 250 local founders, executives, and angel investors are scheduled to attend the first-ever Founder Ball. The event will take place aboard a Toronto-based yacht, featuring a live pitch battle where attendees can allocate their $1,000 admission fee as an investment toward one of the five startups chosen to compete for up to $1 million in startup capital.
“Nothing’s ever been done like this before,” said event organizer Tim Ray, a serial entrepreneur and CEO of VeriFast. Ray emphasized the need to breathe new life into Canada’s venture capital space, moving it from a stuffy boardroom to a fun, interactive environment.
The Competing Startups
The five startups selected from a pool of 20 semi-finalists include:
- Blossom — a social network platform built for investors
- SELLIT9 — a tech re-commerce platform
- Marlow — a women’s health startup
- Vegain — a plant-based nutrition and supplement producer
- Pontosense — an AI-based wellness monitoring system
Addressing the VC Gap in Canada
Ray noted that a lack of early-stage venture capital in Canada often drives many entrepreneurs south of the border for funding. “Canadians are really conservative … we don’t swing big,” he told the Toronto Sun. “We need to start a conversation, create a real movement, and get creative around how we raise capital.”
The event aims to provide a platform for startups to secure funding while fostering a vibrant ecosystem. Throughout the evening, a live leaderboard will display how much investment each finalist is attracting, with the winning entrepreneur crowned at midnight.
The Founder Ball Cup
At the end of the evening, the winner will hoist the Founder Ball Cup, a 25-pound trophy styled after the Stanley Cup. “We’re trying to have as much fun as we are raising capital and creating some noise for the tech ecosystem,” Ray said. “This is like the Stanley Cup of pitch competitions.”
