Family Home Renovation Transforms Dated Design Into Scandinavian-Inspired Haven
Family Home Renovation: Dated to Scandinavian

A 15-year-old stone-clad traditional home in Wentworth Hill has undergone a stunning transformation, embracing Scandinavian minimalism thanks to Calgary-based Lori Sellmer Design Inc. For the Nuell family — Ashley, David, and their children Anderson, 18, and London, 15 — what began as a simple paint and flooring update evolved into a complete main floor renovation.

From Small Changes to Major Overhaul

Homeowner Ashley Nuell explained that while they loved their house, certain aspects had become frustrating. The dark hardwood floors, with their high-gloss finish, showed every scratch and footprint, especially with kids and a dog. The kitchen island was oversized but lacked storage and seating, and the builder-grade cabinetry was peeling after 15 years.

Initially, the couple planned to tackle the project themselves, replacing floors and painting cabinets. However, they soon realized the scope required professional expertise. Ashley admitted feeling nervous about hiring a designer, wanting to ensure their personality shone through.

Finding the Right Designer

On a friend's recommendation, they interviewed Lori Sellmer, who immediately resonated with their vision. Sellmer suggested collecting images of styles they liked, which helped translate ideas into a cohesive design plan. The design process began in February 2025 and took about four months.

Kitchen Redesign: The Heart of the Home

The renovation started with the kitchen, replacing dark wood and roped detailing with light, airy elements. New cabinetry, a concrete hood fan, and a sleek island with waterfall edges and seating transformed the space. The color palette features white porcelain Dekton countertops, a matching backsplash, glass pendant lighting, soft off-white and taupe tones, and brass accents, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Expanding the Scope

As the project progressed, it expanded to encompass the entire main floor. Lori Sellmer noted that this is a common scenario: clients initially seek aesthetic help, but discussions about functionality and family flow often lead to broader renovations. The updated main floor now offers better flow, ample storage, and a timeless, fresh look that is easy to maintain.

A Family-Friendly Result

The Nuells are thrilled with the outcome. The new floors are washable and durable, the kitchen island provides practical seating and storage, and the overall design reflects their personality while embracing Scandinavian simplicity. The renovation has made their home more functional and beautiful, perfect for family life.
