Police have arrested nine suspects, including seven teenagers, following an investigation into auto theft networks operating across southern Ontario. The Niagara Regional Police Service announced the arrests on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, after a months-long probe targeting organized vehicle theft rings.
Investigation Details
The investigation, dubbed Project Steal, was launched in early 2025 in response to a surge in vehicle thefts in the Niagara region and surrounding areas. Police say the networks targeted high-end vehicles, often using sophisticated methods to bypass security systems. The stolen cars were then either sold domestically or shipped overseas.
Suspects and Charges
Among the nine suspects, seven are teenagers aged 16 to 19. They face a total of 45 charges, including theft of motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, and trafficking in stolen goods. Two adult suspects, aged 22 and 24, are also in custody. Police executed multiple search warrants in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, and Toronto, recovering 12 stolen vehicles worth an estimated $1.5 million.
Community Impact
Auto theft has become a growing concern in Ontario, with insurance rates rising and residents feeling increasingly vulnerable. Niagara Regional Police Chief Bill Fordy said in a statement, “This operation sends a clear message that we will not tolerate organized crime activities that target our community’s property and safety.”
Police Collaboration
The probe involved collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police Service, and the Canada Border Services Agency. Authorities are continuing to investigate potential links to larger criminal organizations and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in court in St. Catharines later this week. Police anticipate further arrests as the investigation continues.
