Youth under 18 ride OC Transpo free this summer

Youth under the age of 18 can ride OC Transpo for free this summer, the city announced. The program, effective immediately, allows children and teenagers to travel on all OC Transpo buses and the O-Train without a fare from July 2 to September 6, 2026.

Who is eligible and how does it work?

Any youth aged 17 or younger can board without a pass or ticket. Riders may be asked to show proof of age, such as a health card, passport, or student ID. The program covers all regular OC Transpo services, including the O-Train lines.

According to the city, the initiative aims to make transit more accessible for families during the summer months and encourage young people to use public transportation. It is part of a broader effort to increase ridership and reduce traffic congestion.

Background and impact

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said in a statement, “This program removes barriers for young people and their families, making it easier to explore our city and enjoy all that Ottawa has to offer this summer.”

The free ridership program is expected to benefit thousands of youth across the capital. OC Transpo estimates that up to 50,000 young riders could take advantage of the offer each month. The city has allocated $1.5 million from its transit budget to cover the lost fare revenue.

What about other transit options?

The free ride does not apply to Para Transpo, the door-to-door service for people with disabilities. Youth using Para Transpo must still pay the regular fare. Additionally, the program does not cover services operated by other transit agencies in the region, such as STO in Gatineau.

OC Transpo encourages youth to plan their trips using the OC Transpo app or website. The free fare period coincides with many summer camps and programs, making it easier for participants to get around.
