The City of Windsor has announced the start of construction on a new nature-forest themed playground at Optimist Memorial Park, located on Ypres Avenue in South Walkerville. The $466,000 project will replace existing play equipment with a larger, more accessible playground designed to accommodate children of all abilities.
Project Details and Features
The playground replacement includes new rubber safety surfacing, a perimeter concrete sidewalk, site furnishings, and drainage improvements. The city stated that the work is part of the broader Playground Replacement Program, a citywide initiative to modernize neighbourhood parks and expand accessible recreation opportunities.
City council previously approved $16.3 million to replace 35 neighbourhood playgrounds across Windsor and build a new destination "super playground" at Lanspeary Park. The program includes a mix of small, medium, and large playgrounds to improve access to inclusive play spaces throughout the city.
Construction Timeline and Safety
Construction is expected to continue through mid-August, weather permitting. The playground area will remain closed during construction, and city officials are asking residents to stay clear of the site for safety reasons.
According to a news release, the Optimist Memorial Park project aligns with Windsor’s broader capital investment plan. The city’s 2026 budget includes a 10-year capital plan valued at $2.26 billion, with more than $317 million in capital spending this year. Of that, $29.2 million has been allocated to community services, including parks, recreation, facilities, and culture.
Community Impact
Children in South Windsor will soon have a new accessible place to play, as the project aims to better serve children of all abilities. The city encourages residents to visit cityw.ca/playgrounds for a complete list of playground projects included in the replacement program.
