Edmonton Food Bank 45th Anniversary Campaign Amid Record Demand

Edmonton's Food Bank has launched its 45th anniversary campaign amid what officials describe as the highest sustained demand in the organization's history. The food bank reported a 30% increase in monthly visits compared to the same period last year, with more than 30,000 individuals relying on its services each month.

Unprecedented Need Strains Resources

According to Marjorie Bencz, executive director of Edmonton's Food Bank, the current demand is unlike any previous peak. “We are seeing a sustained level of need that we have never experienced before, even during the height of the pandemic. The cost of living, housing affordability, and inflation are driving more families and individuals to seek help,” she said. The food bank distributed over 1.2 million kilograms of food in the first quarter of 2026 alone, a 20% increase from the same period in 2025.

Campaign Goals and Community Response

The anniversary campaign aims to raise $2 million and collect 500,000 kilograms of food donations over the next three months. The food bank is also launching a new mobile pantry service to reach underserved neighborhoods. Bencz emphasized that community support is critical. “We are asking Edmontonians to donate what they can, whether it's food, funds, or time. Every contribution makes a difference,” she added.

Broader Context of Food Insecurity

Edmonton's Food Bank is not alone in facing increased demand. Food banks across Canada have reported similar trends, with Food Banks Canada noting a 25% rise in visits nationally in 2025. The organization has called for government action on poverty reduction and affordable housing. In Edmonton, the food bank has partnered with local grocery stores and farms to source fresh produce and reduce waste.

How to Get Involved

Donations can be made online or at drop-off locations across the city. The food bank also encourages virtual food drives and corporate sponsorships. For more information, visit the Edmonton's Food Bank website or call their office. The campaign runs until September 30, 2026.
