Agape Table, a long-standing Winnipeg organization providing meals to those in need, has opened a new standalone space just two doors down from its previous location in the basement of Wave Church on Furby Street. The move marks a significant milestone for the charity, which has outgrown its former home amid a surge in food insecurity across the city.
A New Chapter for Agape Table
The new facility, unveiled on May 7, 2026, offers expanded capacity and improved amenities for clients and volunteers. Executive Director Mariette Stephenson expressed relief and gratitude, stating, "This is a place we can finally call home." The organization had operated from the church basement for years, but increasing demand necessitated a larger, more accessible space.
Rising Need in Winnipeg
Food insecurity in Winnipeg has reached critical levels, with more families and individuals seeking assistance. According to recent data, food bank usage in the city has risen by over 30% in the past year, driven by inflation, housing costs, and stagnant wages. Agape Table serves approximately 600 meals daily, a number expected to grow with the new location.
The standalone building features a commercial kitchen, a dining area, and space for additional services such as clothing donations and referrals to social programs. Stephenson emphasized that the new setup allows for greater dignity and efficiency: "People can sit down and enjoy a meal in a proper setting, rather than in a cramped basement."
Community Support
The transition was made possible through community donations, grants, and volunteer efforts. Local businesses and residents contributed funds and labor to renovate the space. The organization hopes to continue expanding its outreach, including breakfast programs and partnerships with local farms for fresh produce.
As food insecurity shows no signs of abating, Agape Table's new home represents a beacon of hope. "We are here to stay and to serve," Stephenson added, "and we invite everyone to join us in this mission."
