Easton Cowan delivered a dramatic series-winning goal with just 12 seconds remaining in the third period on Sunday, propelling the Toronto Marlies to a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Monsters in Game 5 of the North Division final at Rocket Arena.
The Marlies now advance to the Eastern Conference final in the Calder Cup playoffs, where they will face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a best-of-seven series. This marks Toronto's first appearance in the conference final since 2019, when they lost to the Charlotte Checkers in six games.
A Familiar Face in the Opponent's Camp
The series adds an intriguing subplot: former Toronto Maple Leafs forward and executive Jason Spezza serves as general manager of the Penguins. Spezza reports to Kyle Dubas, who is the president of hockey operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization.
How the Game Unfolded
Parked to the left of Monsters goaltender Zach Sawchenko, Cowan netted his fourth goal of the playoffs off a pass from Vinni Lettieri, which may have initially been a fanned shot. Lettieri had earlier tied the game 1-1 in the first period and assisted on the tying goal by Marlies captain Logan Shaw at 15:30 of the third period. Lettieri earned first-star honors for his two-point performance.
Cowan's knack for clutch playoff performances is well established. He built a reputation for delivering in high-pressure situations with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, culminating in being named MVP of the 2025 Memorial Cup. In his rookie season with the Maple Leafs, he recorded 29 points in 66 games.
Former Leafs forward Zach Aston-Reese and Hudson Fasching scored for the Monsters. Marlies goaltender Artur Akhtyamov made 22 saves, while Sawchenko stopped 21 shots for Cleveland.
