“Late Night” host Seth Meyers, despite taping his show before the start of Monday night’s NBA Finals game, seemingly already knew how President Donald Trump would be received by the Madison Square Garden crowd. To virtually nobody’s surprise, Trump was booed by Knicks fans while being shown on the jumbotron during the national anthem.
Meyers did not have to be Nostradamus to know exactly how the crowd would react to the president, based on his history of attending sporting events during his second term. “Now we’re taping this in the afternoon on Monday, so we don’t know how Trump will be received, but if his history of appearing at sporting events is any indication, his appearance at MSG is not gonna go great,” Meyers said.
The “Late Night” host then played a montage of the president getting booed at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Final, the 2025 U.S. Open Men’s Singles Final and a Washington Commanders game last season. “Yikes, he got booed at tennis, soccer and football. You think Knicks fans are gonna be more forgiving?” Meyers said. “Here’s how forgiving Knicks fans are. In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, THEY WERE BOOING THE KNICKS!”
The Knicks were defeated 115-111 in Monday night’s game, snapping their 13-game playoff win streak. Many fans were quick to suggest that Trump’s attendance at the game “jinxed” the team.
