The Saskatchewan Roughriders delivered a memorable performance for fans in Saskatoon on Saturday evening, defeating the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-27 in their first CFL game in the Bridge City since 1991. A crowd of 7,654 at Griffiths Stadium erupted in the final minute as rookie quarterback Brayden Schager connected with rookie receiver Daniel Wiebe on a three-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
Veterans and rookies shine
After sitting out most starters in their first preseason game in Calgary, the Roughriders deployed nearly all of their veterans on Saturday while also evaluating rookies ahead of roster cuts next weekend. The Blue Bombers, playing their first preseason game, brought a veteran roster as well.
Winnipeg struck first as quarterback Zach Collaros completed his first three passes to Tim White for 57 yards, setting up a two-yard touchdown run by Brady Oliveira for a 7-0 lead. Saskatchewan responded with a similar drive: quarterback Trevor Harris connected with KeeSean Johnson for 48 yards and Kian Schaffer-Baker for 25 yards, leading to a two-yard touchdown run by A.J. Ouellette to tie the game at 7-7.
Backup quarterbacks take over
After one drive, Jack Coan replaced Harris for Saskatchewan, while Canadian Taylor Elgersma took over for Collaros. On Coan's second pass, he was intercepted by Bombers defensive back Evan Holm, who returned the pick 55 yards for a touchdown to put Winnipeg up 14-7.
The Bombers added a 50-yard field goal before Roughriders running back Mario Anderson sprinted for a 30-yard run. However, Coan was sacked to end the drive, and Johnathan Kim converted a 51-yard field goal to make it 17-10. A rouge on a 73-yard punt single cut the lead to 17-11, but Alex Hale's 57-yard field goal attempt went wide. Kim later hit a 40-yard field goal to make it 17-14 at halftime.
Second-half surge
In the third quarter, Coan engineered an eight-play, 53-yard drive capped by a 12-yard touchdown pass to rookie Johnny Johnson III, giving Saskatchewan a 21-17 lead. On Winnipeg's next drive, Elgersma drove the Bombers to Saskatchewan's 36-yard line before rookie defensive back James Burgess intercepted him at the 15-yard line.
The Bombers regained the lead in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by Oliveira and a field goal, setting the stage for Schager's heroics. After throwing two interceptions earlier, the rookie quarterback led a game-winning drive, finding Wiebe in the end zone with 42 seconds left to seal the 31-27 victory.
