The Edmonton Elks secured a rare season-opening victory, defeating the Ottawa Redblacks 29-21 on Saturday at TD Place Stadium. It marks the first time since 2019 that the Elks have won their first game of the season, snapping a streak of four consecutive 0-3 or worse starts.
Rankin Rolls
Running back Justin Rankin was the star of the show, rushing for 102 yards on 13 carries with a 7.8-yard average and a touchdown. He also added five receptions for a team-leading 94 yards, nearly achieving a double-triple (100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving). Remarkably, 90 of his rushing yards came after initial contact, including a 61-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that proved decisive as Ottawa mounted a late comeback.
Turned-Up Turnovers
Edmonton's defense forced four turnovers, including two turnovers-on-downs and two fumble recoveries, winning the turnover battle 4-0. This ball protection was especially commendable given the rainy, slippery conditions. However, the Redblacks still managed a potential game-tying drive in the final minute, highlighting areas for improvement.
Seeing Red (Zone)
The Elks struggled in the red zone, settling for four field goals instead of touchdowns. This left potential points on the board, turning a possible 28-point haul into just 12. Even converting half of those drives into touchdowns would have added eight points, making the final score less tense.
Wrap 'Em Up
While Rankin was difficult to contain, Elks defenders also had trouble tackling Redblacks running back Daniel Adeboboye. The 27-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., forced six missed tackles en route to 87 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, the most rushing yards by any player in Week 1 according to Pro Football Focus.
Looking Ahead
The win is a positive step for a franchise that has not made the playoffs since 2019. However, consistency will be key. A Week 1 victory loses its significance if not followed by more wins. The Elks must avoid the early-season holes that plagued them in recent years to build on this momentum.
