Mabrey powers Tempo to first WNBA win over Storm 86-73

Marina Mabrey scored 24 points and dished out six assists to lead the expansion Toronto Tempo to their first-ever WNBA victory, an 86-73 triumph over the Seattle Storm on Wednesday night.

Historic night for Toronto

The Tempo, playing in their inaugural season, secured the milestone win in front of a lively crowd at their home arena. Mabrey, acquired in the offseason to be the team's floor general, delivered a stellar performance, shooting 9-of-16 from the field and knocking down four three-pointers.

Brittney Sykes added 18 points and five rebounds, while forward Aliyah Boston contributed a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards. The Tempo controlled the game from the second quarter onward, building a lead that stretched to as many as 16 points in the third period.

Storm struggle offensively

Seattle was led by Jewell Loyd, who scored 22 points but shot just 8-of-21 from the floor. Skylar Diggins-Smith added 15 points and seven assists, but the Storm struggled to find consistency, particularly from beyond the arc, where they shot only 6-of-22.

The Storm, a perennial playoff contender, fell to 1-2 on the season. Head coach Noelle Quinn cited defensive lapses as a key factor in the loss. “We didn't execute our game plan, especially in transition. Toronto capitalized on our mistakes,” she said after the game.

Mabrey's leadership shines

Tempo head coach James Wade praised Mabrey's composure and leadership. “Marina has been phenomenal all preseason and carried that into tonight. She made big plays when we needed them and kept the team focused,” Wade said.

Mabrey herself remained humble, crediting her teammates. “It's a team effort. Everyone stepped up, and we played together. This is just the start for us,” she said.
