RCMP in Saskatchewan are searching for a man believed to be responsible for the death of a 26-year-old man in the northern community of Pelican Narrows. The incident comes shortly after the remains of a missing Ontario boy were discovered in the same area.
Suspect Wanted for Second-Degree Murder
Police have issued a warrant for 31-year-old Brett McCallum, also known as Nigel McCallum, on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Jaden Custer. Officers responded to a home in Pelican Narrows around 3:40 a.m. on Thursday, where they found Custer injured. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
McCallum is described as six feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. He has scars on both forearms, a crown tattoo on his right hand, and a tattoo of a rosary and cross on his left forearm.
Community on Edge After Recent Violence
Custer's death follows the discovery of the remains of 16-year-old Jay'siiah Webb-Long on May 18. Webb-Long had been reported missing from Brampton, Ontario, in 2025. In a statement, leadership from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) expressed condolences to both families, noting that the losses are felt across the entire nation.
The statement highlighted that the two homicides are part of a pattern of serious violence in Pelican Narrows, including Molotov cocktails thrown at homes and drive-by shootings. In response, the community has set up security checkpoints, banned ATVs and fireworks, and prohibited private gatherings such as birthday and graduation parties.
Call for Additional Support
PBCN leadership is calling for more law enforcement support, as well as additional resources to address addiction and mental health issues. They emphasized the need for more support for youth and improvements to cellular infrastructure to enable a community alert system.
The violence has left residents on edge, and leaders are urging provincial and federal authorities to step up assistance to ensure safety and stability in the community.
