A Victoria police officer has been charged with sexual assault following an independent investigation into an off-duty incident. The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) announced the charge against Constable Chris Kayiatos after an external investigation led by the West Shore RCMP, a detachment in Greater Victoria.
Details of the Incident
In April 2025, VicPD was contacted by a third-party agency regarding an alleged sexual assault involving one of its members. West Shore RCMP was immediately assigned to lead the investigation. The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) was also notified.
VicPD recently learned that the British Columbia Prosecution Service has approved a sexual assault charge against Kayiatos. The constable has been suspended, and his duty status will be continually reviewed and assessed.
VicPD Statement
“From the outset, VicPD has fully co-operated with all investigative requests, recognizing the seriousness of the allegation and the importance of maintaining public trust,” said a VicPD spokesperson in a statement issued Friday.
Chief Constable Fiona Wilson emphasized the gravity of the allegations. “Allegations of this nature are deeply concerning and do not reflect the standards of professionalism and conduct expected of VicPD members,” she said. “At the same time, it is important that the judicial process be allowed to proceed independently and fairly. We remain committed to accountability, transparency, and ensuring all allegations are treated with the seriousness they deserve.”
Wilson also noted that the officer is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.
The investigation was conducted independently to maintain impartiality, and VicPD has assured full cooperation throughout the process. The case highlights the ongoing efforts to uphold public trust and accountability within law enforcement.
