A teacher was slashed in the neck and two students were injured in a stabbing attack at a high school in Manchester, England. The incident occurred at Co-op Academy Manchester in Blackley at the start of the school day on Tuesday morning.
Details of the Attack
Greater Manchester Police reported that officers responded to a stabbing call at the school. Three individuals were hurt: a 27-year-old teacher who was stabbed in the neck while trying to protect students, a 14-year-old girl with a shoulder wound, and a 14-year-old boy with an ear injury. All three were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The school was placed in lockdown, and students were instructed to remain in their classrooms, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Teachers Subdue the Suspect
The alleged attacker, a 14-year-old girl, was detained by school staff before police arrived. Witnesses identified the adult victim as a science teacher who attempted to wrestle a knife from the student as she attacked fellow pupils. Five teachers reportedly trapped the knife-wielding girl in a classroom.
“She tried to get outside the classroom to attack other kids but other teachers held the door closed on her,” a witness told the U.K. Sun. Another young witness described the scene as “terrifying,” stating, “The teacher tried to get the knife off her but ended up being stabbed in the neck.”
Police Investigation
The young suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning. Chief Inspector Jon Shilvock said, “We understand that this incident will have caused concern to pupils, staff and the wider school community. The incident was swiftly and quickly dealt with by staff before officers attended to arrest the girl. There is believed to be no wider threat at this time, and we thank everyone for their support as emergency services dealt with this.”
The academy, which has about 1,650 students, closed for the remainder of the day as the investigation continues.
