Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing an incident early Saturday morning in Ottawa's ByWard Market, where a 32-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after falling from a second-floor landing in a parking garage while attempting to evade police.

Incident Details

According to the Ottawa Police Service, officers responded to a call at a commercial business in the ByWard Market just before 3:30 a.m. regarding an unknown individual who had entered the premises. As officers arrived, the suspect fled and, during the pursuit, suffered serious injuries after falling from a second-floor landing in a parking garage at 30 York Street.

Emergency Response

The Ottawa Paramedic Service confirmed that they were dispatched to the parking garage at approximately 3:40 a.m. and found the man with critical, life-threatening injuries. He was subsequently transported to a local trauma centre for emergency medical treatment.

SIU Involvement

The SIU was notified and has invoked its mandate to investigate the incident. The SIU is an independent agency that examines police interactions that may result in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm, or sexual assault. Three SIU investigators have been assigned to this case in Ottawa.

In a statement, the Ottawa Police Service said, "The Ontario Special Investigations Unit was notified and has invoked its mandate. Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the SIU."

The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released by the SIU as the probe continues.
