Snowbirds a National Treasure; ByWard Market Needs Village Concept
Snowbirds a National Treasure; ByWard Market Village

In a series of letters to the editor published Saturday, May 23, 2026, Ottawa Citizen readers shared their views on topics ranging from the future of the Snowbirds to the revitalization of the ByWard Market.

Embracing the Village Concept for ByWard Market

Douglas Cornish of Ottawa argues that the proposed Vendor Village is a great idea for the ByWard Market's survival and growth. He suggests the area should be rebranded as "ByWard Village" to evoke a sense of community and uniqueness, similar to villages in New York or Paris. Cornish emphasizes that the village should feature a diverse mix of independent mom-and-pop shops and cafes, rather than corporate chains, to create a destination where visitors can discover something new around every corner.

Snowbirds as a National Treasure

JA Summerfield from Winchester, ON, defends the Snowbirds demonstration team, calling them a national treasure. He urges the government to purchase SAAB GRIPEN jets built in Canada to replace the CF-118 HORNETs and include 14 two-seat versions for the Snowbirds. This would reduce maintenance costs and ensure the team continues to inspire Canadians.

High-Speed Rail Concerns

Francois P. Jeanjean of Ottawa questions the viability of a high-speed train between Ottawa and Montreal, noting that the combined population of about 3.2 million is insufficient to support frequent service. He compares it to the successful TGV between Paris and London, which connects two metropolitan areas of 10 million each, and warns that the project could become a white elephant.

Jerry Fiori, past-chair of the Ottawa Disability Coalition, advocates for the Leitrim Station over the Tremblay Road Station for high-frequency rail, citing better connectivity to the O-Train, airport, and park-and-ride facilities. He stresses the importance of seamless and convenient transfers for seniors and persons with disabilities.

Parking Issues at Tulip Festival

Georgina Ukrintz of Ottawa criticizes the city for issuing parking tickets during the Tulip Festival, where one-hour parking limits left families with no viable options. She calls the enforcement shameful, as the festival is meant to be a family-friendly tourism event.

Condolences for Jordan Junger

The letters also include heartfelt condolences to the family of Jordan Junger, who died in a freak accident at an auto repair shop in Kanata.
