Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation after a man suffered life-threatening injuries while attempting to flee from police in Ottawa's ByWard Market. The incident occurred on the morning of May 23, 2026, prompting the SIU to invoke its mandate.
Details of the Incident
According to initial reports, officers from the Ottawa Police Service were conducting an operation in the ByWard Market area when an individual attempted to evade them. During the pursuit, the man sustained serious injuries that required immediate medical attention. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The SIU has assigned a team of investigators to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident. As part of the investigation, the SIU will examine police actions, including whether any force was used and whether proper protocols were followed.
Witness and Evidence Collection
Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant video footage to come forward. The SIU has also secured the scene and is collecting physical evidence. The identity of the injured man has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
This is not the first time the SIU has been called to investigate incidents involving police in Ottawa. The agency is frequently tasked with probing cases of serious injury or death that may have resulted from police conduct.
The Ottawa Police Service has stated that it is cooperating fully with the SIU investigation. In a brief statement, the force expressed concern for the injured man and emphasized the importance of transparency in such matters.
The ByWard Market area, a popular tourist and commercial district, was temporarily cordoned off during the initial investigation, but has since reopened to the public. Further updates are expected as the SIU continues its probe.
