Rubio: Hezbollah Trying to Drag Lebanon Back into Chaos

U.S. Secretary of State Accuses Hezbollah of Destabilizing Lebanon

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a strong statement on Sunday, accusing the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah of actively trying to plunge Lebanon back into chaos. Rubio denounced what he described as Hezbollah's reckless call to overthrow Lebanon's democratically elected government, asserting that the group is deliberately seeking to drag the nation into destruction.

Rubio's Statement on Hezbollah's Threats

In his statement, Rubio emphasized that Hezbollah's threats of violence and overthrow will not be allowed to succeed. He declared that the era in which a terrorist group held an entire nation hostage is coming to an end. Rubio's comments were made during his visit to India, reflecting the U.S. administration's firm stance against Hezbollah's activities.

Hezbollah Leader Calls for Protests

Earlier, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem urged Lebanese citizens to take to the streets and bring down the government in response to Israeli strikes and U.S. sanctions on the Al-Qard Al-Hassan financial institution. This institution, affiliated with Hezbollah, provides interest-free loans to Shia Muslim communities facing financial hardship amid Lebanon's economic crises.

U.S. Pressure on Lebanon

The Lebanese government has been under increasing pressure from the United States to take action against Al-Qard Al-Hassan, as Washington intensifies its efforts to curb Iran's influence in the region. Rubio's statement underscores the U.S. commitment to supporting Lebanon's stability and opposing Hezbollah's attempts to undermine the government.

Ongoing Conflict with Israel

Despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was recently extended, Israel continues to strike what it describes as pro-Iranian Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Hezbollah has also maintained its attacks on Israeli targets in southern Lebanon. The U.S. is currently negotiating a deal with Iran to end the Middle East war, with reports suggesting a draft memorandum of understanding that would include provisions to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Netanyahu's Remarks

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that former President Donald Trump, in a phone call, reaffirmed Israel's right to defend itself against threats on every front, including Lebanon. Qassem expressed hope for an agreement between Iran and the U.S. and that Lebanon would be included in its terms.

Hezbollah's Stance on Talks with Israel

Qassem reiterated his call for the Lebanese government to abandon direct negotiations with Israel. A fourth round of talks is scheduled for June 2 and 3 in Washington. The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange fire, despite the ceasefire agreement.
