An Ontario Provincial Police officer has died in the line of duty near Hearst. Provincial Constable Tarun Bali, a 2.5-year veteran of the force, was killed during an investigation on Tuesday afternoon. The suspect is now in custody, according to OPP officials.
Details of the Incident
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. EDT in a rural area west of Hearst, a small community in northern Ontario. Constable Bali was responding to a call when he was fatally shot. Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique expressed condolences, stating, "This is every police officer and family member's worst nightmare." The province has ordered flags at all government buildings to be lowered to half-mast.
Investigation Underway
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been deployed to probe the circumstances of the shooting. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is in police custody and is expected to face charges.
Constable Bali joined the OPP in 2023 and was stationed at the Hearst detachment. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. Community members have gathered at the detachment to pay tribute, leaving flowers and notes of support.
This marks the first OPP line-of-duty death in 2026. The last was in 2024 when Constable Steven Daigneault was killed in a collision.
