OPP Constable Tarun Bali Killed in Line of Duty in Hearst

The Ontario Provincial Police are mourning the loss of one of their own after Constable Tarun Bali was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday. The 29-year-old officer from Brampton was deployed with the James Bay Detachment in Northern Ontario when the incident occurred.

Details of the Incident

The tragedy unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on June 9, 2026, near Hearst, Ontario, at the intersection of Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6. OPP members were conducting an investigation when Bali was seriously injured. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene. The OPP’s Criminal Investigations Branch is leading the probe, which remains in its early stages.

“It is with deep sorrow that I confirm that OPP Const. Tarun Bali was killed in the line of duty this afternoon in Hearst,” OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique announced on social media. “His courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten.”

A Devoted Officer

Bali was stationed at the Dufferin County Detachment in the OPP’s Central Region but had volunteered to serve with the James Bay Detachment in the North East Region. Colleagues described him as a “good, solid and keen police officer” who was compassionate and kind. Last Christmas, he volunteered in a toy drive to ensure local children received presents from Santa Claus.

“This is every police and family member’s worst nightmare,” said Ontario Provincial Police Association president David Sabatini. “On behalf of the OPP Association, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Provincial Constable Bali’s family, friends and colleagues. We will steadfastly support his family and co-workers.”

Bali is the second OPP officer to die in the line of duty this year. In late April, OPP Sgt. Brandon Malcolm of the Northumberland detachment died after a motorcycle crash on Highway 401 near Cobourg.

Outpouring of Tributes

Tributes quickly poured in from across the province. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw offered condolences, saying, “We mourn alongside our policing partners across Ontario and will remember Officer Bali’s service and sacrifice.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also expressed his sorrow. “I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of OPP Provincial Constable Tarun Bali, who was killed in the line of duty today while serving in Hearst. On behalf of the people of Ontario, I extend my sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and OPP colleagues. We honour his courage, service and sacrifice.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by police officers daily. As investigations continue, the OPP community and the province mourn the loss of a dedicated officer who gave his life while trying to protect others.
