Police Chief's Concerns Ignored
Mazier highlighted an excerpt from Stubbs' letter, which noted that the injection site had led to the closure of nearby childcare facilities due to safety concerns—a situation described as unprecedented in Ottawa. Stubbs expressed that his force was “especially troubled by the unintended but serious consequences.”
Michel acknowledged reading the letter but stated that other factors influenced the decision to renew the exemption. She did not specify these factors, instead deflecting responsibility by claiming that provinces fund such sites and federal authorities merely provide exemptions.
Provincial Funding Cut Shortly After Renewal
The Sandy Hill injection site received its exemption renewal on March 5. Just eleven days later, the Ontario government under Premier Doug Ford announced it would cut financial support for seven supervised consumption sites, including Sandy Hill’s, effective June 13, 2026. This timing raises questions about whether the provincial government actually supported the renewal.
Health Canada’s claim that it follows provincial lead appears inconsistent, given Ford’s known opposition to injection sites. The department seems to have its own agenda, disregarding both provincial stances and community safety concerns.
Broader Pattern of Ignoring Opposition
This incident is not isolated. Months before the Sandy Hill renewal, a similar drama unfolded at an injection site in downtown Toronto, where community members also pleaded with Health Canada to deny renewal. In both cases, the department proceeded despite clear opposition from local authorities and residents.
Critics argue that Health Canada is prioritizing ideological commitments over public safety and community well-being. The renewal of exemptions in the face of police warnings and parental outcry suggests a systemic disregard for local input.
