Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) on Tuesday compared U.S. negotiations with Iran to the classic Peanuts routine where Charlie Brown is tricked by Lucy into trying to kick a football, only to have it pulled away at the last moment. Speaking on Fox Business, he expressed doubt that a deal would materialize anytime soon.
Gimenez Criticizes Trump's Iran Strategy
When asked whether President Donald Trump was inadvertently helping Iran by urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt bombing in Lebanon in an attempt to appease Iranian leaders—a stance echoed in a Washington Post editorial—Gimenez told host Stuart Varney that he does not believe Trump's approach is effective.
"Look, I'm starting to feel like we're Charlie Brown and Iran is Lucy, and every time we go to kick the ball, it's taken away," the Florida congressman said, referencing the iconic comic strip's recurring gag.
Frustration Over Repeated Promises
Gimenez voiced frustration with Trump's repeated assurances that a deal is imminent, mimicking the president: "'We're close to a deal, we're two days from a deal, we're three days from a deal,' and it's not happening."
The congressman remains pessimistic about progress, despite Trump claiming on Monday that the U.S. and Iran are in the "final throes" of negotiations.
"If I were in Vegas right now, I'd be betting that in two days we'll be right where we are today," Gimenez said. He added that Iran "deserves punishment" for retaliating against Israel over its strikes on ally Lebanon.
New Obstacle in Negotiations
Negotiations appeared to hit another roadblock on Monday when Trump alleged that Iranians shot down an Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the U.S. "must" respond to the attack.
