Australian police are investigating a severe assault on a Canadian man in the popular tourist town of Byron Bay, located on Australia's southeastern coast. The incident occurred late Sunday local time when a 28-year-old man flagged down a police patrol car, reporting that he had been attacked.

According to a statement from police, the man told officers that he had been drinking in a park on a main street with a group of about five males he had just met. The group suddenly turned on him, and he fled into the bush before stopping the police vehicle. Officers provided first aid at the scene and then transported him to Byron Bay Hospital.
The man, identified as a Canadian national, is reported to be in serious but stable condition with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and spinal injuries. His name has not been released to the public.
