Peel Regional Police have removed another illegal firearm from the streets, continuing their crackdown on gun violence in the region. On May 17, 2026, at approximately 1:35 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop near Torbram Road and Drew Road in Mississauga, leading to the seizure of a loaded Glock 17 handgun and ammunition. This marks the 44th crime gun seized in Peel Region in 2026, according to Deputy Chief Marc Andrews.
Traffic Stop Leads to Discovery
The traffic stop was initiated after officers observed suspected violations. The occupants were detained under the authority of the Cannabis Act, and a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a loaded illegally possessed handgun and a magazine containing ammunition. The firearm, a Glock 17 model, is illegal in Canada and is believed to have been smuggled from the United States. The ammunition was described as a mix and match of different bullets, indicating the suspects were not legal gun owners.
Charges Filed
Two men were arrested and held for bail hearings. Tyrell Foote, 25, of Mississauga, faces multiple charges including unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and careless storage of a firearm. Kieshawn Morgan, 20, of Toronto, faces similar charges plus breach of probation. All charges are yet to be proven in court, and the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Police Commitment to Public Safety
Deputy Chief Andrews praised the frontline officers for their work, stating that the cadence of firearm seizures is unprecedented in Canadian policing history. He emphasized that while legal gun owners follow regulations, the criminal element on the streets poses a significant threat. The seizure of this gun prevents potential harm, as each bullet could have caused injury or death. However, police acknowledge that many more illegal guns remain in circulation.
This incident follows recent reports of gun violence in the region, including a shooting on Highway 401 where a driver was injured by flying glass. Police continue to investigate the origins of the seized firearm and its possible involvement in other crimes.
