Located at 3293 West 4th Avenue in Vancouver's upscale west side neighborhood, Charm Thai represents an ambitious expansion for owners Gift Laohongvichit (known as Lao) and chef Percy Tanwattanaku (known as Tan), who previously earned Michelin Guide recognition for their Fraser Street location in 2024.
From Michelin Recognition to Strategic Expansion
The story begins with Zab Bite, which captured attention with its cheerful atmosphere, affordable pricing, and bright, clean Thai flavors that earned it a coveted Michelin Guide nod. Building on this success, the owners have now launched Charm Thai Eatery in a space previously occupied by several pub-style establishments, including Displaced Hashery Beach Bar, which was frequented by Canadian singer Michael Bublé when his sister co-owned the venue.
"We're excited to bring our culinary vision to a new neighborhood," says Lao, who handles marketing for both establishments. "While Zab Bite focuses on northern Thai cuisine, Charm allows us to explore dishes from multiple regions of Thailand with a more upscale approach."
Chef's Background and Culinary Philosophy
Chef Tan brings extensive experience to both restaurants, despite having no formal culinary training. Growing up in Thailand where his family operates a resort, he developed his skills in the kitchen from a young age. "I opened my first restaurant right after graduating," Tan explains. "Before coming to Vancouver, I operated five casual restaurants in Bangkok serving innovative poke bowls with unique twists."
The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted his expansion plans in Thailand, prompting his move to Vancouver where he has since established two successful Thai restaurants with distinct personalities.
Menu Highlights and Dining Experience
While Charm Thai shares some classic dishes with its sibling restaurant—including pad Thai and green curry—the menu primarily features new creations that showcase regional Thai specialties. During a recent visit, standout dishes included:
- Shrimp crackers served with a rich pork and peanut dip, accompanied by whole Thai chilis for adventurous diners ($14)
- Generous shrimp cakes with authentic sweet chili sauce imported directly from Thailand ($23)
- A trio platter featuring crispy tofu, taro fritters, and corn cakes with chili sauce—a gluten-free and vegan option offering excellent value at $16
"The flavors are focused, bright, and approachable," notes Lao. "While we don't claim to match the sophisticated techniques of establishments like Maenam, we deliver consistently satisfying Thai cuisine that appeals to both newcomers and experienced diners."
Future Expansion Plans
The entrepreneurial team isn't stopping with two locations. By this summer, they plan to open Zab Bite Express in the revitalized Burrard Food Court concourse at Bentall Centre. "The developers specifically reached out to include our concept among the local offerings," Lao reveals.
This expansion into Vancouver's downtown core demonstrates the growing recognition of their culinary approach and the increasing demand for quality Thai cuisine in diverse settings across the city.

Charm Thai occupies a strategic location in an affluent neighborhood where restaurant activity has traditionally been less dynamic than in other parts of Vancouver. The establishment operates with dinner service Monday through Thursday and expands to include lunch on Fridays through Sundays.
