A New Brunswick couple experienced an unexpected roadside delivery after their local hospital suspended labour services, forcing them to welcome their baby on the Trans-Canada highway.
Emergency Delivery on the Highway
Mariah Jackson and Fernando Gonzalez were driving to another hospital when Mariah went into active labor. They pulled over near Nackawic, N.B., where their son Liam was born with the help of a 911 dispatcher and passing motorists.
Healthcare Gaps Exposed
The couple's local hospital had temporarily halted labour and delivery services due to staffing shortages, a growing issue in rural areas. The family now advocates for better access to maternal care in remote communities.
Baby Liam is healthy, and the family is grateful for the support they received during the emergency.
