The Servus Calgary Marathon weekend kicked off Saturday with record-breaking participation across its 10-km, 5-km, Kids Race, and Diaper Dash events. More than 20,000 runners registered for the weekend, surpassing last year's record of 17,300.
Record Turnout and Global Trends
Kirsten Fleming, CEO of Run Calgary, described the turnout as 'absolutely epic' and noted that the increased interest in running is part of a global phenomenon. 'The demographics show young adults are running at unprecedented rates,' she said, attributing the trend to a desire for community and mental health benefits after the pandemic.
Community and Mental Health Focus
Fleming highlighted that running is an affordable sport that helps people improve both mental and physical health. She hopes to build infrastructure to ensure the trend is sustainable. Events like the Kids Race and Diaper Dash encourage young families to stay active.
Diaper Dash Highlights
Fourteen-month-old Georgia King-Moore participated in the Diaper Dash, initially crawling toward the finish line before getting distracted by cameras. With encouragement from parents Emily and John King-Moore, she eventually crossed the finish line. The race supported HomeSpace, an affordable housing charity.
Charity Involvement
The marathon featured a record 125 charities through the Servus Charity Challenge, allowing runners to support their chosen cause. Fleming noted that this unique concept is rare in running events across Canada.
