Alberta experienced a significant amount of rainfall during what meteorologists are calling the 'June monsoon,' leading to several communities recording exceptionally high precipitation levels. According to data from Environment Canada, some areas saw more than double their average monthly rainfall in just a few weeks.
Top Wettest Communities
The community of Banff topped the list with over 200 mm of rain, followed by Canmore and Jasper. Calgary also received substantial rainfall, with totals exceeding 150 mm in some parts of the city. The heavy rains caused localized flooding and road closures, but no major damage was reported.
Forecast for More Rain
Meteorologist Jodi Hughes from the Sky Watch Weather Centre says that more rain is expected in the coming days. 'We're not out of the woods yet,' Hughes warned. 'Another system is moving in, and it could bring additional precipitation to already saturated areas.'
Residents are advised to monitor local alerts and avoid driving through flooded roads. The ground is extremely wet, and there is a risk of landslides in some mountainous regions.
Impact on Agriculture
The heavy rains have had mixed effects on Alberta's agriculture sector. While some crops have benefited from the moisture, others have been damaged by waterlogging. Farmers in southern Alberta are particularly concerned about potential crop losses.
Overall, the June monsoon has been a reminder of Alberta's variable weather patterns. As climate change continues to influence weather systems, such extreme events may become more frequent.
